Sorry I haven't updated DA for a while, the site is still wigging out for me a lot!
I caught up with some Adventure Time recently, as I've been hearing good things...
I stopped watching it regularly about a year ago when the show (in my opinion) was losing direction and the quality of episodes was quite patchy (for every great episode, there would be one with a cool idea that was either too big or too small to fit the 11-minute timeslot, then there'd be another episode that felt really rushed and confused). Some episodes just felt like the writers were throwing 'random' humour around to cover up plot-holes or to make up the running time.
So I sat down to watch most of season 4 and the start of season 5, and I must say that I've been won over, the plots seem to be less 'random' and more satisfying than before, developing pre-existing characters and having a more solid tone throughout. The tone of the show overall has gotten a good bit darker, I personally like the way it's handled since it doesn't feel like pandering (more that the adventures are just getting bigger and more structured) but it's not gonna be for everyone - if you watched the show mainly for the offbeat humour, it's still there, just it's a bit less... 'random'.
I thought the season 5 opener "Finn the Human/Jake the Dog" was a considerable risk because it was so different from the rest of the series, and one that really paid off!
(I am going to try drawing some art of the alternate world in this episode)
